- The forebears of the Spens family were the Earls of Fife. The younger son of the 4th earl, John 'Dispensator' is supposed to be the first ancestor of all Spens families in Scotland, Denmark, Sweden and Austria. His great-grandson Henry de Spens, died ca. 1300, was the first bearer of the family name.
The Spens of Boddam, in Aberdeenshire, were the direct ancestors of the Spens von Boden family. documented as being settled in Silesia in the 17th century. Albrecht Spens von Boden, born ca. 1640 in Scotland, came together with other Scottish military adventurers (including Johannes von Spens, last of Boddam, Jakob count of Leslie, Patrick Gordon, and Franciscus de Hay, Baron von Degaltie) to Austria. Subsequently they were further ennobled (Reichsfreiherr) in Bohemia, 22 Aug 1781. The family bore on its arms the Lion Rampant, with the bend and three mascles that signified the house of Lathallan, and the family motto.
